A new graduate-level program at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo is designed to give people with no formal business education the information they need to run a business effectively.

 

A new graduate-level program at Vancouver Island University in Nanaimo is designed to give people with no formal business education the information they need to run a business effectively.

The graduate certificate in business is a one-year, three-semester program that will provide students with the skills needed to start their own businesses or move into management positions.

The program also will accommodate working professionals who want to pursue it part time.

Applications will open on Oct. 1 for the first intake of students in September 2018.

 

Shipyards names Corr vice-president

Jim Corr has been appointed vice-president of planning and estimating at Vancouver Shipyards, owned by Seaspan, which also owns Victoria Shipyards.

Corr is responsible for leadership and direction on network planning, detail planning and production control, as well as estimates for new ship construction.

With a background in major government-procurement projects, Corr’s experience is considered critical to Vancouver Shipyards as it builds non-combat ships for the federal government under the national shipbuilding strategy.

These vessels will come to Victoria for testing prior to being handed over to the federal government.

 

Wine magazine toasts Empress

The 88-seat Q at the Empress has received a 2017 Award of Excellence from the magazine Wine Spectator. The awards recognize dining establishments with wine lists featuring at least 90 selections that complement the cuisine and appeal to a wide range of wine lovers.

The Q at the Empress restaurant was part of the $60-million upgrading of the Fairmont Empress.

 

Vancouver Island rated No. 1

Readers of Travel + Leisure magazine named Vancouver Island the best island in Canada in its annual awards.

The Island was described as “remote, yet worth the effort; the scenery is spectacular. Whether you just want to look, or explore the island on foot, kayak, or boat, you will be delighted.”

The Gulf Islands placed second among the top islands in Canada. The Magnolia Hotel & Spa in Victoria was voted top city hotel in Canada.

The Wickaninnish Inn in Tofino nailed down the fourth spot in the category for the best resort hotel in Canada, and the city of Victoria was voted the third-best city in Canada.
