The provincial commission working to find a path to a $15 minimum wage will hold in-person consultations across the province over the next few weeks. The commission will be in Victoria Nov. 29 seeking input and perspectives from the community.

In order to make a submission to the commission in person, send an email to FWC@gov.bc.ca. A time slot to make a presentation will be offered if the schedule allows. The Fair Wages Commission is seeking input on the timing of wage increases for the general workforce, as well as looking at wage fairness for liquor servers, live-in camp leaders, home support workers, resident caretakers and certain farm workers. People can also submit a brief or other written feedback by sending an email to FWC@gov.bc.ca.

 

Nanaimo care home names administrator

Eden Gardens, a long-term care home in Nanaimo for 130 residents with dementia, has appointed Toni Wheeler as its new administrator. She will be responsible for the overall management and operations of Eden Gardens, a new purpose-built facility. Wheeler brings more than 25 years of experience in health care at senior living facilities on Vancouver Island, and in Saskatchewan and Alberta. Nanaimo Travellers Lodge Society, a non-profit charity, owns and operates Eden Gardens. It has been a leader in elder care in the mid-Island area for 37 years, serving Ladysmith, Parksville, Nanaimo and Qualicum Beach. It started construction of Eden Gardens’ new residential care home in July 2015. The home has been operational since April 28.

 

Tourism Vic adds Vancouver manager

Tourism Victoria has added Denise Jury to its Business Events Victoria team. Jury, who will be based in Vancouver, will join as general sales agent and will act as sales manager as of Dec. 1. Jury has 20 years of experience in the tourism industry and will represent Business Events Victoria in the primary markets of Vancouver and Seattle as well as secondary markets of Calgary, Edmonton and Portland. Business Events Victoria is the meetings, conventions and major event division of Tourism Victoria.

 

World-class beer brewed on Island

Three Vancouver Island Brewing beers have won medals at the World Beer Championships, a blind tasting competition judged by Tastings.com. “We have had a fantastic year reinventing our production process,” said production manager Danny Seeton. Hermannator 30th Anniversary Ice Bock and Hermannator Barrel Aged Ice Bock won gold medals while the Gladstone Brewing Collaboration Burton Ale took a bronze.
