Engine work cancels one Coho sailing

Black Ball Ferry Line has cancelled the Coho’s last round-trip sailing trip on Thursday, Sept. 24 so the ship can undergo mechanical work. Black Ball said it is replacing a turbo assembly on one of the ferry’s main engines. The work will affect the 5:20 p.m. sailing from Port Angeles, Washington and the 7:30 p.m. departure from Victoria’s Inner Harbour. The Coho will resume regular service on Friday, Sept. 25, with all scheduled sailings beginning with the 8:15 a.m. departure from Port Angeles. “Black Ball Ferry Line thanks our customers for their patience during this temporary service disruption and we sincerely apologize for any inconvenience,” Ryan Burles, president of Black Ball Ferry Line, said in a statement on Friday.

New brew for Category 12

Category 12 Brewing, one of Victoria’s newest craft breweries, has released a new ale. After only nine months in business and fresh off a gold medal at the Canadian Brewing Awards, Category 12 launched Simplicity Ale, a straw-coloured, pearlescent ale with a 5.2 per cent alcohol content. The brewer describes it as “clean and subtly bittered with just a hint of Belgian sass.” Simplicity Ale is initially being released in Category 12’s tap room at 2200 Keating Cross Rd. in Saaninchton and at select pubs and restaurants in the region. The company’s Disruption Black IPA won gold at the Canadian Brewing Awards this year.

Builder brings new partners

Founder Mike Miller has brought on two partners at Abstract Developments. Sam Ganong has been added as vice-president of development and Kyle Ryan takes the position as vice-president of construction. Abstract, which has been around for 16 years, made its name in custom home builds, but has recently expanded to multi-family developments in the region. Abstract will open a sales gallery at the corner of Oak Bay Avenue and Foul Bay Road this fall.
