Canadian pastry chain BeaverTails will open its first Victoria location this weekend as the company continues to add new stores to its network of 100 locations in North America. The new store, at 602 Broughton St., will also feature BeaverTails’ sister brand Moozoo Gelato, sorbet and frozen yogurt.

The company has been selling BeaverTails — whole-wheat pastry, hand-stretched to resemble the tail of a beaver and served hot with a choice of toppings — since 1978. It has since expanded to the U.S., Korea, Japan, the UAE and Saudi Arabia. There is an existing Island location at Mount Washington.

Phillips part of patriotic beer

Canadians will be able to toast their country’s birthday this year with a new beer concocted by brewers representing the country’s various regions.

Coast to Coastless Imperial ESB is a collaborative effort between Victoria’s Phillips Brewing, Garrison Brewing from Nova Scotia, Microbrasserie Le Trou du Diable from Quebec and the Flying Monkeys Craft Brewery of Ontario. It is to be sold coast-to-coast in time for July 1. The group created a recipe designed to reflect Canada. According to the brewers, it is an Extra Special Bitter, a style with roots that trace back to England, but as an amped-up imperial version it has a strong spirit that is purely Canadian.
