New Canadian Tire store to open next week

A Canadian Tire store is slated to open in the Hillside shopping centre on Nov. 17, four days after the Douglas Street store closes.

The two-level store, which fills space left empty after a Target department store closed, will be the second-largest Canadian Tire in Canada, behind an Edmonton outlet.

Brown paper is covering the store’s windows, but products are being set up in the 93,500 square feet of retail space. The entire facility is almost 140,000 square feet.

Store general manager Greg Honour said Wednesday the store will have 150 employees.

Canadian Tire and home-improvement store Lowe’s snapped up several Target locations. Lowe’s has already opened a store in Nanaimo on Rutherford Road and in the former Target store at Tillicum Mall.

With 93,000 square feet of retail space, the new Lowe’s is similar in size to the Canadian Tire at Hillside. Lowe’s aimed to hire 160 staff, plus 10 seasonal workers.
