Former Mexican street dog Zander, who got free of his collar and bolted Saturday from Victoria International Airport, was captured late Sunday evening.

There were a lot of sightings of the seven-month-old pup, but being nervous and skittish, he eluded capture until 6 p.m. last night, according to Jan Staebell, of MexPup.

MexPup is a non-profit operation that rescues homelss dogs from Mexico and places them with families in Canada and the United States.

Zander will now got to foster home and, once he has settled down in a few weeks, he will be available for adoption through MexPup, Staebell said.

Zander had flown in with two other dogs from Mexico who were taken away by their adoptive families. Zander was also supposed to be immediately headed for a foster home.

“They were putting a harness on him, and he just started wiggling and freaking and managed to get out of his collar,” said Karen Munroe of MexPup Canada.

“He’s an absolute sweetheart, but he’s so, so nervous,” Munroe said.
