Valeant buys U.S. eye drug company

Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. said Monday it has agreed to buy Eyetech Inc., a private company that markets an anti-vision loss drug in the United States.

Terms of the deal were not disclosed, although Valeant said the upfront payment and future milestones total less than two times sales and will be immediately accretive.

Eyetech, a Florida-based company, sells Macugen in the United States, while Pfizer Inc. does the same elsewhere. The drug, designed to treat age-related macular degeneration, is administrated by injections into the eye.

“The ophthalmology market has similar characteristics to the dermatology space and is a natural extension of our development capabilities,” J. Michael Pearson, chief executive with Valeant, said in a release. “We will continue to look for future opportunities to acquire additional products and gain important critical mass in this specialty space.”

The deal is expected to close this week.
