Two people were airlifted to hospital following an early morning crash on Highway 18.

Four people are injured following a serious collision on Highway 18 just west of Hillcrest Road, police say.

The head-on crash occurred about 6 a.m. Wednesday morning after an eastbound pickup left its lane.

“The eastbound pickup appears to have crossed the centre line into the path of a westbound pickup truck with a boat and trailer attached,” North Cowichan/ Duncan RCMP spokesman Cpl. Jon Stuart said.

The drivers of both trucks were airlifted to hospital, though Stuart wasn’t certain whether it was to Victoria or to Vancouver.

The passengers — one in each vehicle — were both taken hospital by ambulance, he said.

“The two trucks were destroyed,” Stuart said.

A third vehicle — another truck towing a boat  — had been travelling in a convoy with the westbound truck and stopped when the crash occurred.

At least one occupant of that vehicle, a young girl, was attended to by medics but didn’t appear to be physically harmed.

Stuart said while officers from his detachment responded, members of the South Island Traffic Services unit are taking over the file.
