Construction on the first of two federal joint support ships for the navy has begun.

Canada’s Minster of National Defence Harjit Sajjan took part in steel-cutting ceremony at Seaspan’s North Vancouver shipyard to mark the occasion on Friday.

The ships are being built as part of Seaspan’s job to build non-combat ships for the federal government under its national shipbuilding strategy.

The joint support vessels will about 570 feet long and be among the largest ships to be built on Canada’s west coast.
