In the accompanying photo, a tugboat pushes a giant crane into docking position along the Bay Street waterfront on Tuesday morning. The 49-metre, 200-tonne crane will be used to build the west foundation and abutments for the new Johnson Street bridge. It is one of three cranes — now all on site — to complete the foundation of the bridge over the next year. A 46-metre, 160-tonne crane on the east side will build the east foundation, including the new bascule pier. An 80-tonne crane on the west side is being used to fabricate the permanent piles for the foundation of the bridge.
