Three Coast Salish artists have been picked to fashion designs for three new B.C. Ferries vessels under construction in Poland.

Each artist will develop a design related to the vessel’s name. The lower half of each ship will be covered in a vinyl wrap showcasing the art, a Ferries spokeswoman said Wednesday.

Darlene Gait of the Esquimalt First Nation will create a design for Salish Orca, scheduled to arrive in B.C. this year.

John Marston from Stz’uminus Nation near Chemainus will craft a design for Salish Eagle.

Thomas Cannell from Musqueam is responsible for Salish Raven’s design.

The Eagle and Raven vessels will be delivered in 2017. Designs will be unveiled as they are completed, B.C. Ferries said. Artists were selected from 27 concepts submitted.

B.C. Ferries also announced its new cable ferry, the Baynes Sound Connector, will begin its run between Buckley Bay and Denman Island Jan. 22 to Jan. 28, and then Jan. 31 to Feb. 3. On those days, it will share duties with the vessel Quinitsa.
