Valeant Pharmaceuticals International Inc. said Monday it has agreed to buy Eyetech Inc., a private company that markets an anti-vision-loss drug in the U.S. Terms of the deal were not disclosed, although Valeant said the up-front payment and future milestones total less than two times sales and will be immediately accretive. Eyetech, a Florida-based company, sells Macugen in the U.S., while Pfizer Inc. does the same elsewhere. The drug, designed to treat agerelated macular degeneration, is administrated by injections into the eye. "The ophthalmology market has similar characteristics to the dermatology space and is a natural extension," J. Michael Pearson, Valeant chief executive, said in a statement.
