Breeze Boutique, an anchor women's wear retailer at the Bastion Square gate on Government Street for more than 25 years, is moving at month's end. Their lease expires and owners Bhupinder (Mike), Meena and Avtar Purewal are re-opening a block away in the former Current Fashions location at 622 Yates, next to UVic's Legacy Gallery and across from Azuma Sushi. The Purewals acquired Breeze in 2007 from Phyllis Linklater who founded the clothing retailer in what had been a fire-damaged pancake restaurant. Breeze will continue to sell its host of designer labels, including Mexx, Kersch, Papillion, Oxmo, Garcia, Schwiing and Silver Jeans.

AROUND THE RING

The Gustavson School of Business at UVic will add 60 additional students this fall, increasing capacity to 300. It will alleviate some of the demand, according to vice-president academic and provost Reeta Tremblay, who says UVic has at least three qualified applicants for every available seat in the BCom program ... Dr.

A.R. 'Elango' Elangovan, professor and director of international programs with the Gustavson School of Business, was honoured with the prestigious 3M National Teaching Fellowship, which recognizes exceptional achievements and contributions. He's the ninth UVic prof to receive the award ...

Dr. Budd Hall, a professor at UVic's School of Public Administration, was appointed to the UNESCO Chair of CommunityBased Research and Social Responsibility in Higher Education. Hall's goal is to encourage university research partnerships in Africa that focus on poverty reduction, sustainability and other complex issues.

NEW HOME IN SIDNEY

The Sidney Fashion Exchange has a new home at 2388 Beacon Ave., next to Barbara's and across from Miss Bliss. The number remains the same, 250-655-5279. Jennifer Hill, who also owns the Oak Bay Fashion Exchange at 1509 Amphion, says she's the only consignment store on the south Island that is exclusive for plus (14 to 7X), maternity and tall fashion divas.

ON THE MOVE

B.C. lumber giant Interfor announced the retirement of CFO Sandy Fulton. He's been with the company since 2004 and will remain in a consulting capacity to oversee capital projects, including the rebuild of Interfor's Grand Forks mill ... Allison Brownlie has joined Mountain Equipment Co-op as its new direct marketing manager. She joins the outdoor equipment retailer from MNBA Canada where she led the card services provider's marketing and customer acquisition strategies. MEC has 15 stores in six provinces, including downtown Victoria .... H&R Block has opened a location on the third floor of the Bay Centre.

THE WICK RE-OPENS

The Wickaninnish Inn has re-opened after a five-week closure to remodel rooms and the Pointe Restaurant and build a new "sea cave" steamroom feature in the Ancient Cedars Spa. Contractors from Tofino, Ucluelet, Port Alberni and Parksville all worked on the project designed by BBA Design Consultants and based on suggestions from visitors.

ACCOUNTANTS HONOURED

Victoria's Lindalee Brougham and Lori Wanamaker have been honoured with fellowships by the Institute of Chartered Accountants of British Columbia, a designation awarded for contributions to the community and service to the profession. Brougham chairs the board of directors and the steering committee for the Victoria International Airport Authority, and serves on the board of the Victoria Police Department. Last year, she also joined the board of the Union Club of Victoria, becoming one of only a few women to have served in this capacity. Past contributions include six years of service on the board of the Canadian Homebuilders Association, and seven years on the board of the Greater Victoria Chamber of Commerce, where she helped launch the Regional Economic Development Agency. Wanamaker is the deputy solicitor general of B.C. and deputy minister for the Ministry of Justice. Since 1990, she has held a variety of senior positions in government. Wanamaker has volunteered with organizations such as the Victoria Women's Sexual Assault Centre, Iyengar Yoga Centre of Victoria, and National Public Safety Advisory Committee. She currently serves as co-chair of the Integrated Partnership for Regional Emergency Management, as an advisory board member for the School of Business at Royal Roads University, and as a board director and audit committee chair for Forestry Innovation Investment. Wanamaker is also a governor of the Justice Institute of B.C., an organization responsible for the training of police officers, fire fighters and first responders.

ALLIED GLASS MOVES

After more than a half century on Rock Bay Avenue, Allied Glass have moved - but only around the corner to 561 David St. The company has supplied and installed residential and commercial glass since 1960. General manager Jeff Devine wants customers to know Allied shouldn't be confused with a Vancouverbased window company that has a similar name and recently went out of business. Call 250-388-5108.

VIKING INKS DEAL

Viking Air has endorsed St. Paul, Minn.-based Wipaire Inc. as a factory service centre for its Series 400 Twin Otter aircraft and legacy de Havilland support network. The company has been engineering and manufacturing floats for more than 50 years, including those certified for Viking's new Otters. The Victoria aircraft manufacturer made the announcement at the Singapore Air Show, where it sold 15 Twin Otters for nearly $100 million this week.

NEVERBLUE PROMOTION

Breen Liblong has been promoted to vice-president of technology at Neverblue, the lead generation network based in Victoria that links customers with business clients around the globe. Liblong will continue leading development and operations teams at Neverblue.

LANDECA WINS CONTRACT

Landeca has won a three-year landscaping contract with the Victoria Airport Authority to maintain public areas around the terminal building at Victoria International Airport. Landeca, an employee-owned integrated property services firm with 54 full-time staff, won the undisclosed bid over 20 other firms, according to the authority.

NEW SPOT FOR DAD'S

Dad's Homemade Soups and Sangys has moved from Colwood Corners to 310 Wale Rd. under the new 7-Eleven building near Lee Valley Tools. Dad's makes fresh soups, sandwiches, wraps and salads for dine-in and takeout, and also offers catering. Call 250-391-0689.

PUBLISHER LEAVES MAG

Peter Baillie has left his position as publisher and sold his equity position at Boulevard Magazine to majority owner John Simmons. Baillie, a former publisher and advertising director at the Times Colonist, joined Boulevard two years ago. He said in a release he will "miss the business but at the same time I am looking forward to new challenges." Baillie took the lifestyle magazine from a bi-monthly publication to 12 issues a year.

NEW AUTO CENTRE OPENING

Ian Calvert is the new owner of Deep Cove Auto Service and opens the bay doors March 1 at the site he'll share with the Co-op Gas Bar, 10930 West Saanich Rd. Calvert has a combined 25 years in the auto repair business with Cadboro Bay Village Service and Saanich Auto Repair. He has three service bays and offers diagnostics, repairs, service and inspections on foreign and domestic vehicles. He's also selling tires. Calvert will have a grand opening on March 3 from 8: 30 a.m. to 4: 30 p.m. Call 778-426-1321.

COOKING SCHOOL CLOSES

French Beach Cooking School, operated by Marcie Gauntlett out of her Shirley-area home for several years, is closing shop.

Gauntlett, who sourced food such as wild mushrooms and mussels with students from the surrounding forest and sea, said she's "downsizing her energies."

BUILDERS MARK CENTURY

The Vancouver Island Construction Association marked its 100th anniversary on Wednesday with a reception hosted by B.C.

Lt.-Gov. Steven Point at Government House. The trades group traces it roots back to the start of construction of Victoria High School in 1912 when the workers and companies formed the Victoria Builders Exchange. Greg Baynton, chief executive of VICA, said the association has served its members as they built houses, churches, offices buildings, stores and schools over the past century. "Their dedication to the craft, their vision and their hard work has created a beautiful and safe world to live in," said Baynton. "We're excited about the future and look forward to the innovations members today will contribute over their lifetimes." The merger of three Island construction associations two years ago created VICA, which now has more than 500 members. This year's chairman is Peter White of Kinetic Construction while the vice-chair is Chris Erb of C&M Development Inc.

FUNDING NOD FOR NORTH ISLAND TOURISM GROUP

The Regional District of Mount Waddington has renewed a three-year contract to provide funding through a hotel tax for Vancouver Island North Tourism. Andrew Jones was elected chair of the destination marketing organization, succeeding Gaby Wickstrom who served two years. The group promotes cultural, adventure and nature-based tourism initiatives from a dozen communities and areas, including Port Hardy, Woss/Mount Cain, north to the end of the Island including Alert Bay, Sointula and sections of the mainland coast.

CLIPPING FOR A CAUSE

Garry and Chris Preston of headstart salon at 1315 Cook St. will hold their second annual Cutathon in support of the Cridge Centre for the Family's Respitality Program on March 4. The minimum donation for a hair cut is $15 and everything will go to the cause that provides parents or guardians of a child with a disability a chance for rest and rejuvnation in a welcoming and comfortable environment while their child receives respite care in the family home. Up to 10 stylists will be working the event, which runs from noon to 4 p.m. and includes door prizes. Call 250-384-5523.
