Tahsis residents expected to get all-clear on tap water

Residents of Tahsis are expected to get the all-clear to drink their tap water tomorrow.

A violent rainstorm last Friday resulted in gravel clogging the water intake which brings water to the 600 people in the village.

Residents have been given bottled water for drinking and otherwise were asked to boil tap water before drinking.

The Vancouver Island Health Authority has been testing water samples taken at six-hour intervals, said Mayor Corrine Dahling today.

“We’re hoping things will be back to normal [Wednesday],” she said.

The people are taking the boil-water order imposed by VIHA in stride, said Dahling.

“It’s just nature,” she said. “Sometimes the road will wash out and you fix it and hope it will never happen again.”

The residents are resilient, she said.

“We haven’t had a power outage for two years but people know to have their flashlights and go to the rec centre if they need anything.

“We all have freezers up here because sometimes you can’t get out [on the only access road].”

Tahsis is located 60 kilometres northwest of Gold River.
